Kid's Monogram Canvas Art: Making Colorful Magic with Crayola

As a child, coloring was my favorite activity. My parents knew how to make me happy - bring me a nice big box of Crayola Crayons! The first thing I did every-single-time I got new crayons was to organize them all by color. I still remember how excited that made me.

Now that I am a mom, Crayola Products are a staple in our house. They play a major role in helping my little artist express her creativity. My daughter spends her free time making projects and creating her own kind of magic with markers, crayons, paints, sidewalk chalk - you name it!

My crafty daughter especially loves to create mini versions of my crafts, with her own unique spin of course! Recently I was making a monogram project on a burlap canvas...and she loved it. She begged me to let her make one too. I promised her she would get a chance to create one for herself, and now the day has come for her #ColorfulCreations to be brought to life.

Usually I involve my daughter in selecting supplies, but for this project, I wanted to surprise her! While she was at school, I went shopping for this #CollectiveBias campaign at Walmart. I knew that she would be thrilled to see the new packages of Crayola sidewalk chalk, crayons, and washable paint I purchased. I also picked up a new set of Crayola Markers because we always need those!

If you need supplies for this project, be sure to stock up...there is a lot of Crayola inspiration at Walmart for sure!

Before we sat down to make this project we decided to invite one of Jules's friends over to make a canvas too. It was the perfect activity for these two!

As we began, I gave the girls some direction and helped them set up.  Of course I oversaw all of this project...but "sat on my hands" so that I would not jump in (my bad little habit) - I wanted this to be uniquely theirs! I was excited to teach them how to mix the different products - washable paint (which I am happy to report washed off everything in a snap, including me!), sidewalk chalk, and crayons. This photo below show a good close up of all the different elements...i just LOVE it!

Mixing textures and mediums is one of my favorite this to do when I create art and I am also happy to report they loved experiencing working with so many different supplies to make an amazing art piece!

Create it!
  • Protect the work surface. I laid down long pieces of paper and taped it to the table.
  • Begin by creating the background for your monogram on the canvas panel:

  • Prepare the Crayola Washable Kid's Paint and lay out paintbrushes.
  • Paint on top of the chalk in whatever way inspires you. If you need some "help" consider using a pouncer to make polka dots, or stripey waves, or use some masking tape to create regular stripes...and of course flowers! These girls loved their polka dots, and used the pouncer to polka dot their canvas.
  • Let dry.

Prepare the Monogram:

  • Color the printable in with Crayola Crayons. Use whatever color combination you desire - with 96 colors, the possibilities are endless!
  • Once the design is colored in, use the Sidewalk Chalk and color in the background of the print.
  • Rub/Blend the chalk with your fingers..or better yet a tissue or cotton ball.

  • Trace the outline of the wood letter onto the colored Floral Print Coloring Page and cut it out with the child safety scissors. Cut inside the pencil line, so that there is very little overhang that needs trimming. A parent may need to assist the child with this step depending on the child's ability to maneuver the scissors and the style of letter you select,
  • Apply Crayola Washable School Glue on the wood monogram and spread with a paintbrush.
  • Place the cut out (from the Floral Print) on top of the wood letter, smooth out with fingers.
  • Let dry.
  • With my help, we used a Crayola Washable Black Marker to outline the letters edges.

Embellishments
I purchased a package of multi-sized wood hearts. I let the girls do as they wished with the hearts. They painted some, colored some with crayons, colored some with sidewalk chalk, and used portions of the floral print coloring page to cover them (like the monogram).

Assemble:
  • Determine the position for the letter and flowers/embellishments. The letter can be centered or offset. It really depends on which letter you are using, as they all have a different shape and will look better in different places.
  • Use the Washable School Glue to adhere the letter to the monogram- cover the back of the letter in the glue and place onto the canvas.
  • Repeat with the hearts.
  • Add buttons (or other embellishments) to the hearts or canvas if desired.
  • Let dry completely. We let ours dry overnight (it was rainy and moist the day we crafted).

That is a table that looks like fun!
Be sure to have your kiddo sign the corner of their art or at the very least sign the back...and don't forget to date it!
