Let's Get to Know Each Other

Create a life that makes you smile...
one project,
one cookie,
one pickle,
one remodel
at a time!

holly504main@yahoo.com

California girl, author, fashion designer, DIYer, crafter, wedding expert, mocha lover, and "Mama." I like to {make a mess and} let the creative juices flow...and with any luck it all works out. I grew up in a family with a “do-it-yourself” philosophy, so naturally I have made designing, crafting, and DIYing an integral part of my life. From glitter to plate joining biscuits to a jig saw – I love it all and embrace using materials in new and sometimes unusual ways to create a style that is clever, unique, and totally fun!

Here's a bit of what I do here.

I have...
built an ottoman.
installed a faucet.
made over my backyard.
moved 2 tons of stone.
painted.
glued.
hammered.
sawed.
nailed.
cooked real food.
cooked good food.
(and a few icky things too)
sewed.
glittered.
made a mess.
not finished everything I have started.
watched too much reality TV.
stayed up too late.
drank too much coffee.

I promise to...
try to be original.
to put a new spin on the ordinary.
to create easy crafts.
to create complicated crafts.
to try new things
(bathroom remodel anyone?)
to not shy away from a challenge.
to be honest.
to have integrity.
to be ethical.
to be supportive of other bloggers.
to never make a cake pop.
to not use chevron.
to keep it fun.
to be REAL.
to throw in some sass.
to be polite.

So if you like it so far, here is the back story and more behind the craziness.
In a life a long, long time ago, I was a fashion designer. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles (long before Lauren Conrad was a "student" there). I did my time in the trenches and worked as everything from a Design Assistant to a Patternmaker to a Textile/Print Designer to Designer. I loved it...I hated it...I was harassed by bosses...made some great friends...and learned invaluable life lessons.

Then, all my girlfriends started getting married and the wedding bug totally bit me...so I went on to conquer the wedding biz! I planned over 150 weddings with budgets ranging from $10,000 to $200,000. Clients came to me for a fresh approach to wedding planning and my sense of style...and my practicality. I was the Co-Director of the Association of Bridal Consultants, Greater Los Angeles for 2 years.

My wedding planning "expertise" was featured in numerous glossy publication and newspapers, including Glamour Magazine, June 2011 and on Yahoo Shine (2/15/12) and GalTime

Oh yeah, I also hit the airwaves.
There was of course that brush with reality TV chaos,
but more enjoyable experiences were on
The Other Half, NBC
and
Lifetime, "My Best Friend's Wedding"

Oh and did I mention I write about weddings...
a lot!

One day someone asked if I could write a book...
I said "Sure,"
{more on that here}
and since then I have become an accidental author
of several wedding related books...and one fashion book.

My biggest job is to be a mom to two of the cutest, most precocious little turkeys around, and a wife to hubby {who is only mentioned by hubby and does not ever want to see a photo of him self here...how rude!}

Oh, You were wondering abut the name?
I am often asked "What...where...who...why the name 504 Main?"

Well, it is not my current address {do you think I am crazy}, but it once was.
I saved every last cent I had to move out on my own...no roommates, no nothing, just me and all the bills that came with it...but I LOVED it. It was such an amazing period of time. I learned a lot about myself and proved to myself that I can do anything I want to do. When I decided to start a blog I sent the name to a couple of good friends - not telling them anything but that it was a blog name. One of them responded back with exactly the answer I was hoping for..."it could be anything, your home, the coolest restaurant, a hip hotel, a swanky lounge, a cool artists loft, your favorite coffee shop."
There ya go...that's how I named it.

That's it...a peek into the crazy wonderful world here.

The Ultimate Blog Party!

Ultimate Blog Party 2010
Did someone say P-A-R-T-Y!
I never miss a party!
My hubby would add that I can never leave a party,
but that is a whole different story...it's genetic.

Welcome to 504 Main!
One of them responded back with exactly the answer I was hoping for..."it could be anything, your home, the coolest restaurant, a hip hotel, a swanky lounge, a cool artists loft, your favorite coffee shop." There ya go...that's how I named it.
So, you want to know who you are talking to right? I am Holly, and 504 Main is my home away from home where I entertain, cook, and create...and sometimes make a mess {yes, I admit it!}. I am a not-so-domestic diva, turned full-on domestic diva...and I LOVE it {most days}. I want 504 Main to be a comfortable place, the kind of place that you feel like you can stop by anytime, kick off your heels {or boots} and have a mocha...or a glass of wine {or champagne}. You can read more about it HERE.

I am addicted to...
...magazines - fashion, food, home - you name it!
...books {old, new, whatever} - my latest obsession is vintage entertaining and crafting books.
...mochas, especially those from the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.
...makeup. I love my makeup and especially cheap lip gloss.
...shiny sparkly things - they do not have to be expensive...but they have to speak to me!
...writing. I never knew I would end up enjoying writing or actually even make money doing it.
...good pizza - if you are ever in Torrance California, you must go to Rizzo's.
...rethinking what matters to me and what is important in my life.
...renovating and transforming my home.
...treasure hunting. Up to 5 years ago, if anyone would have told me how much fun it was so go to the thrift shop, goodwill, or garage sales, I would have wrote them off as loony...but now I adore it...I guess it is genetic too.
...my garden, which is a little more brown than green...but I enjoy it and I am trying.
...being a good friend and daughter and wife and mom.
...my kids - of course - they are my life and my joy!

What are you going to find at 504 Main?
CRAFTing and CREATing. Some of the latest creations are over there on the side bar. My fave is the birthday chandelier I made for hubby. But I also love my eggs and chicks!
COOKing....Hungry? Check out my recipe for banana buckwheat bread? Or have you tried bacon chocolate chip cookies yet?

LAUGHing...here are a few entries that may amuse you...A journal entry from a 13 year old or a little insight into my excellent parenting skills or our adventures at Family Camp.

Now for the shameless plugs!
I just began a new feature called I'm Tickled Pink. I will do this every Friday...so check out this weeks I'm Tickled Pink and you can win a super-cute Lima Bean Designs apron!
I {heart} my family and game night...check out one of our faves A Ticket to Ride...and guess what, I am giving one away too! Hurry...it ENDS 4/14 at 11:59 P.M. PST
I signed up for my blogger account in 2008 and did nothing with it. I have to be honest...I thought blogs were silly little things...I really had no idea what they even were. BOY WAS I WRONG! {I have no trouble admitting when I am wrong...most of the time.}. Blogging is a lively community of amazing and inspirational men and women with creative, inventive, amazing writings and ideas. I am so happy to be a part of the blogging world.

So...thank you for stopping by! Welcome...kick off your heels and stay awhile!

Photobucket

Imagine my surprise when I checked into Lady Bloggers Society today and discovered I was the featured blog. YIPPPEEEE!!! Now, that is a great way to start off the weekend!

I really cannot tell you how much I {heart} Lady Bloggers Society. Every day is a new topic that teaches me something...and everyone's comments are just as fantastic...and then there is the tea party...I just L-O-V-E tea parties! There is real interaction here and I L-O-V-E it! I am so happy I found them! I am also tickled pink that when a Lady Blogger visits, they leave wonderful, relevant comments. Yeah! My favorite!

Here is a little about me in brief...I am Holly and this is my home away from home where I entertain, cook, create, and occasionally ramble on about this and that. I am a former-ish wedding planner {oh yeah, there is a wedding blog too...Hip Weddings}, turned not-so-domestic diva, turned full-on domestic diva. So, now I am a mom, author, cook, crafter, and all around handy woman {read more about it here}.

I just began a new feature called I'm Tickled Pink. I will do this every Friday and another Lady Blogger, Heather from Gerber Days was my first feature. Check out I'm Tickled Pink and you can win a super-cute Liberty of London mini-journal set.

Hungry? Check out my recipe for banana buckwheat bread or have you tried bacon chocolate chip cookies yet? Or for something more savory, some yummy chili brie {the best ever!}.

Looking for a chuckle...here are a few entries that may amuse you...A journal entry from a 13 year old or a little insight into my excellent parenting skills.

How Do You Define Beauty?

Yes, I love makeup.
Yes, I love a good haircut and a few highlights/lowlights.
Yes, I love clothes, shoes, bags, and especially sunglasses.
But, how do I really define beauty?
How do you define beauty?
About a year and a half ago, over at Hey Gorgeous
(that particular part of the blog is no longer up, 1/15/12),
there was something fabulous going on...
The author of the blog was compiling stories and photos for a project called
A Beautiful State of Mind - The Project
(blog no longer up, 1/15/12)

A Beautiful State of Mind - The Project (blog no longer up, 1/15/12) iexplored what women of all ages, all ethnicities, all walks of life think is beautiful, how they define beauty, and what they think makes them beautiful.

I am in a constant state of self-exploration and discovery, so this project simply fascinates me. Gone are my days of turning heads as I walk down he street {it happened once or twice} - a 6 foot tall blond is bound to do that no matter what - and as those days disappear , I must really consider what makes me beautiful, not physically, but what really makes me and other women beautiful.

I have met gorgeous women, only to get to know them...and not really like what I see anymore. There lack of inner beauty, of kindness, or anything substantial has left me thinking very little of their outer beauty. I have also watched this process in reverse.

Now that I have a daughter, I know I will always think she is beautiful, but I want her to know what true beauty is...what it is to have a "Beautiful State of Mind."

So have you thought about it...How do you define beauty?
And what do you think of these wacky shots - crazy hair and all - my son took of me tonight!?!

 Have a Beautiful Day!
Holly

I {Heart} L.A.

I truly do {heart} L.A.
You might think I am crazy, but this is my homeland...born and bred.
And, yes, that could also explain a lot...

So, I am off this week visiting L.A. and my family and friends.
We love coming to visit..it has been 4 years since we moved,
and I still really miss it...I know, call me crazy!

I thank you all for stopping by...please keep on coming,
but just so you know, the posts and commenting will be sporadic,
as my parents do not have wireless so I am sitting on a stool
with the Mac perched on to of a home copier,
praying I do not wake the kiddos.

Not sure what we are doing...
every time we visit my son asks to go to China Town...
Will we make it this time? Who knows?
He also likes to take Grandma and Grandpa
to Long Beach to play games at Shoreline Village
...yes that one is probably happening.
Disneyland is on the list, but we were just there.
So I am hoping the bribe of the new

and a round of miniature golf with only mommy
(Joe LOVES miniature golf)
will work instead...and I should be about $250.00 ahead.

I had a few posts already prepared...Pumpkin pancakes anyone?
See, I was just whetting your appetite with Sunday Stealing.

Regularly scheduled posting and commenting
will begin again at the end of the week.

Have a great week!
Holly...
Lost in L.A. and lovin' it!

Friend Makin' Mondays--Hobbies

I am having a mental meltdown trying to get my "real" work done, and so todays' regularly scheduled post will have to wait, but I saw this on Nicolasa's blog Low Expectations (I met her on SITS Sharefest Saturday!). And thought, since I {heart} these things (see Sundays post) I would go for it...
Amber @ aefilkins is hosting another fabulous Monday at her blog..Friend Makin' Monday. To meet new people check her out!

What are your hobbies?
*Scrapbooking (not that I am nearly caught up...my son is 8 and I am on his 4th year)
*Crafting: Never met a project I didn't like!
*Cooking and Baking (I call this a hobby because I am still learning...how old am I?)
*Home Improvement: Used to be design, but when we moved, improvement became more necessary than design...now finally at the point of meshing the two.
*Writing: Who knew? I would have never guessed this 15/20 years ago...I hated writing.
*Blogging: Apparently, my intention to start one little wedding blog to support my books/wedding biz has turned into two blogs (one for the family) and a full blown hobby.

What do you wish that you knew how to do?
*Quilting: Have wanted to do this since I saw "How to Make an American Quilt" way back when. Quilting to me is an art and I love it. (My great-grandmother made the quilt above, my grandmother added on to it, and my mom has embroidered all of the girls names on it)
*Golf: No time...they don't take too kindly to 2 year olds as caddies on the Pebble Beach Golf Courses.
*Gardening: I do it but not well. I need to be able to do more than read the tag at the nursery and bring the plant home to die.

What I {heart} to do, but don't do enough:
*Crafting: See above..all the supplies and intentions, but where does the time go?
*Sewing: Was a fashion designer and have not done much since...really miss it!
*Art/Drawing/Painting: Ditto the above two answers.
*Knitting: Great friend taught me how to knit a couple of years ago and I loved it, but with a little munchkin, home duties, and everything else, it has taken a backseat...but I have lots of projects in mind.

I {heart} mochas...a little too much

Back in the day...I used to take a walk everyday down Main Street in El Segundo and get the best ice-blended sugar-free mochas EVER at the Blue Butterfly - I justified the calories with a walk! Then my husband came to me and told me we were moving...HUH!? Moving I am an L.A. girl...well not anymore...for now anyway...but all of that is another post...this is about mochas and my addiction, yes, I feel like I can and should call it an addiction (soon there will be a post about my addiction to blogs!).

Well, I have yet to find a mocha - iced, blended, or hot - that can compete with by beloved Papillon. So for the past four years (yes, four years later I am still mourning the loss of my daily Papillon - they are that GOOD!) I have been ordering sugar-free dutch chocolate powder from The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and making my own. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! Besides, I have probably saved my hubby about $1,000,000 (OK, at least $5,000 - now that is scary how quickly those $4.00 coffees add up!). What did sort of kick me in the butt was the realization that now the components of heaven were sitting on my kitchen counter and I found myself making mochas all day long (it is cold here!)

Well, enough is enough. While I have known this coffee habit was a little naughty, I always justified it by saying there are worse things I could do! BUT, today I cut my coffee consumption in half. Yippeeee! Better yet, I didn't kill my kids or any other unsuspecting souls. Still better, I did not replace it with chocolate or wine!...Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Do you have a bad (or "good") habit? Do you need to stop? Do you care?
By the way...I promise some really good stuff is coming...keep reading!

I {heart} limericks...a new tradition????

My hubby and I attended a 50th b'day party awhile back. The birthday boy and his family have a tradition they shared with the guest that night - they toast each other with limericks...well, that got me all fired up. I needed my own limerick to explain my life...and here it is...

There once was a girl from LA....
planning weddings was how she made her pay
and then one day…
her husband whisked her away
to a small little town on the Monterey Bay

where she worked as a mommy by day.

OK, no worries, I am not quitting my day job (as if I could!), but I have decided that I {heart} limericks! However this may be a tradition that only I will be participating in...everyone thinks I am nuts. Anyone have any traditions they are thinking about starting or have started despite familial resistance.

4, 2, 1 GO!

I just got out of the shower - I shower at night...it is the only way I am assured of getting at least one shower a day - and my mind is racing with dozens and dozens of thoughts about my blog…and then I had to stop! How can I blog about all these great ideas when I have not even had the nerve to write the first post, so...4, 2, 1 – GO! (That’s how my 2 year old Jules counts down!).
