I guess my week just got better....

First...
I was sent a very nice message earlier. I was supposed to go check out someone's blog...and I am a rule follower, so off I went to Matty Thoughts. I love visitng his blog anyway - he always has something great to say on his blog and he is the best commenter! Each one of his comments is so well thought out (unlike my crazy ramblngs). Go check him out NOW and follow along like the rest of us...

Anyway, Matty has given me an award...I am so excited and honored. So here is my shiny new award...

I must pass it on to one person who I think has one hot sizzling blog. I am new and unsure of blogging etiquette (ask me about wedding etiquette and that is a whole different story), and there are so many fantastic blogs that I read...it is so hard to make a decision. Matty said this "Anyone I follow could have it, otherwise I wouldn't even be following them. So if you are my list, don't feel left out but rather consider yourself hot." I think that sums it up (sorry for stealing that line Matty, but it is a good one...and I gave you credit!). So, in keeping with the rules, I pass this award on to:

Holly and Charisse at Life Laugh Latte
They are hilarious...I dare you to watch their videos and not laugh. They give great comments and are great followers (I mean that in a good way). And of course, Holly has a great name! (You too Charisse, but I am partial to the name Holly)

And now...
Now, a couple of days ago I posted that Cynthia at Running with Letters passed on the One Lovely Blog Award to me. She too gives great comments. Her stories are fantastic...I look forward to catching her new posts...and she does this great photography. You must run now, quick and check her out....

Pass the award along to several other blogs that you’ve newly discovered. Remember to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award...

And last but not least...

I was given this by Lee at Hormones, Headaches, & Hot Flashes last week. This award was created by Matty over at Matty Thoughts and has some rules (see bottom of post). He is a great commenter - they are all so thoughtful, and it is super fun to have a man's perspective on things. I was remiss in passing it along..so finally, here it is...

Go check out these blogs...you'll be happy you did!

It has been a crazy week at my house...not quite sure why, but it seems something is a little screwy here. I have lost (and luckily found) my cellphone twice, threw away my car keys (like in the big 'ole trash bin...ICK! Yes, I had to go dumpster diving), lost my house keys, and somewhere in this house is a can of whip cream...On top of the aforementioned whacky stuff, my jobs as wife, mommy, part-time writer, and overall Queen of my Universe have been pushing my buttons.

Buddies...Jacob and Joe

When I work, I typically am on my laptop (which is also on my list of things pushing my buttons), but yesterday, I went into the office and on the wall is a picture that was taken about 4 or 5 years ago. It even found its way back to the bulletin board after we moved. It is well-loved (it was pre-digital camera era and I have no clue where the negative is) but it adds to its charm...just two little (and, might I add, adorable) boys enjoying a cookie and a giggle without a care in the world. When I look at it all I feel is simply, purely JOY!

Bubbles

I will be the first to admit, that sometimes I get caught up in "creating" JOY - pulling out the craft bins, looking up instructions online, buying kits at the craft store. Heck, I get caught up in life...busy, busy, busy body - I am really good at creating busyness, but I am actually making an attempt (each and every day I try...and sometimes succeed) to slow down, simplify, and enjoy my life - my kids, my husband, my parents, and my friends.

Joe and Maddie Swinging
(Maddie belongs to Rook No. 17. Thanks for the photo!)

So, this photo got me thinking about the things in my life that bring me JOY. So, in no particular order, here is a short list...a good friend, a hug, a phone call (not an email!), blowing bubbles, coloring, play dough, swinging, playing with sticks, taking a walk on he beach, searching for sea glass, a nap, flowers, strawberries, pumpkins, the sunshine on my face, a snuggle from my puppy, visits from my parents, a great cup of coffee, hugs from my kids and my husband, giggles and baby belly laughs, Rice Krispie treats, and a fire in the fireplace. I am trying to see the simple JOY in life - the JOY my kids see in the simplest things...a butterfly, a shiny quarter, a rock, a flower (or weed) in the yard, even a broken crayon is JOYful to them.

My Babies

So, I ask, have you figured out how to bring more JOY into your life? If so, what brings you JOY? I would love to hear the answers.

Flowers from my husband

A BIG THANKS!
504 Main has had a nutty week...and I am a couple days late and a dollar short on extending this "BIG THANKS," but this week at our place, the motto is "Better late than never." I would like to thank Cynthia at Running With Letters for passing on the "One Lovely Blog Award." I really appreciate it!
I really enjoy her blog and if you have not stopped by to visit her...you should go do it NOW...it is fantastic.

OK, there are rules...The rules of the "One Lovely Blog Award" are accept the award, post it on your blog along with the name of the person who has granted the award, and his or her blog link. Pass the award along to several other blogs that you’ve newly discovered. Remember to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award...

...but I am not playing by the rules tonight...BUT I promise to asap. I cannot currently form an intelligent thought (I am just messing around tonight and watching Survivor and Project Runway..I do have priorities!)...neither of my kids will sleep! Oh yeah, and I am trying to pack for a small trip.

I also realize that I did not pass on the "Over the Top Award" from last week...Please forgive me..I am a newbie. So expect a post next week with all the recipients.

GROUP BLOG: THE GOOGLE GAME

I do, I really do {heart} pumpkins!

A pumpkin lined path...that leads to the corn maize!
We {heart} corn maizes too!

I am seriously going to try and make a pumpkin totem pole...
stay tuned for the results!
(Photo circa 2008)

This was a 200+ pound pumpkin...we did not buy it!

I just cannot get enough of pumpkins.
I do not know why...
Maybe I like pumpkins because they are not perfect.
They are funny looking and funny shaped,
and they bask in the glow of the sun without a care.

Some have warts and scars, but who cares...they have personality.

This city girl had no idea there were so many kinds of pumpkins...
until she moved to the "country."
(OK, it is not the country but it is not L.A.!)
I am in heaven!

My pumpkin (eating a lolli) with the pumpkins!

Both Joe and Jules carry around their big plastic pumpkin
for weeks before and after Halloween...
(OK, not so much Joe anymore, but he did)
by the time Halloween rolls around he handle is usually made
of duct or electrical tape, but it still works.

Every pumpkin on our porch was lovingly selected by Joe or Jules
and they each lay clam to specific ones...
this is serious business!

I have always liked pumpkins..
maybe because I remember that carving the Halloween pumpkin
was something we always did with Dad.

But, I think I {heart} pumpkins because
I {heart} just about everything that makes my kids happy.
(except Pokemon!)

Of course, I love to eat pumpkins too.
Some yummy pumpkin recipes are headed your way!
Hug a pumpkin today!

(Yes, I may have lost my mind with this post...but I am trying to find it!)

Just for some history…I am born and bred L.A. girl living quietly in Pacific Grove, CA (a.k.a PG). I had never even heard of PG until we moved here about 4 ½ years ago (7+ now)…so for those of you who are trying to place it…we are on the southern end of the Monterey Bay…you may not have heard of us but surely you have heard of Pebble Beach (golf galore) and Carmel (that famous guy Clint Eastwood was mayor once upon a time)...ring a bell? We are right there in that mix.

One of the big who-ha's in PG is the Butterfly Parade.
PG is home to the Monarch Grove Sanctuary, where, in October thousands (much of the Western population) of Monarch Butterflies arrive to hang out for the winter. To celebrate this occurrence, we have a dandy little parade and all the schoolchildren dress up in some sort of costume - this year we had sea horses, Native Americans, and jellyfish to name a few.

The crowning glory of the parade are the Kindergartner's dressed as Monarch butterflies. It is beyond adorable...(I am including a photo of my boy when he was a monarch so you really get the idea.) Really, just try to picture a hundred or so sweet little 5 year olds with antennae and wings and try not to smile. Even I Ms. Delightfully Cynical cannot contain myself.

For Jules, not yet part of the parade, I always make a butterfly shirt. For the first year, I decided to do this at 10:30 pm the night before the parade. I used applique and fabric paint - just whatever I had laying around the house (yes, I did put crystals on the shirt and my husband just about flipped his lid...Mr. Paranoid thought she was going to eat them and choke. Of course she could have, so I do not recommend that to other parents...I only play fast and loose with my own kids!) The results, not bad, considering...

This year I was very happy with the results. I went for a much more modern design. She couldn't wear it that day because, she, of course, was sick. I think it turned out super cute (I wish I would have made one for myself) and here is the scoop...
You Need:
*One T-shirt - 100% cotton is best...BUT since I was in a hurry (again) I grabbed the first blank white shirt I found and it had lycra, and it was not "the best" - the design cracked a bit when we put it on because of the stretch*...I am willing to admit my mistakes. I have spent way too much time and money doing crafts with lame results...I would like to spare others this same pain with any crafts I do. Be sure to wash the shirt first!
*T-Shirt Transfer paper (use stretchable transfer paper if your shirt has a lot of stretch). I tried a different to-remain-nameless brand this time and I am blowing it a big raspberry. I prefer Avery. be sure to get either transfers for light or dark t-shirts depending on the color of T you choose.
*Image of whatever you want to print. I got these butterflies for free by googling "free clip art, butterfly." I am totally into silhouettes right now...just wait until you see the next craft.
*Iron and a pillow case.

To Make:
1. Printed out design on transfer paper. I printed out a bunch of different size butterflies on one sheet of transfer paper. I ran the paper through twice, once regular and once "mirror image." I made a couple butterflies orange for a little touch of color.
2. Cut the butterflies out leaving 1/8" around perimeter
3. Lay out the pillowcase on a hard surface (no ironing board), and put the shirt on top and place the designs - keep in mind you have to flip them over for to iron them on.
4. Flip 'em over and iron on according to the manufacturers directions provided with the transfer paper.
5. Wait for the T and transfer paper to cool (I always try to pull it off because I am impatient...trust me...wait!) before peeling off the back, and voila! Cute little T!

Just for fun...PG in a Nutshell...
Now I am not really sure where this fits in, but I must share some PG history, facts, whatever you want to call them (at least my interpretation of them). PG is charming and quaint - it began as a Methodist camp in 1875; we have more Victorian houses per capita than anywhere else in America; we have the oldest continually operated lighthouse on the West Coast; and John Steinbeck as well as Robert Louis Stevenson have rich history here.

PG is also a bit odd (sorry folks, from an outsiders perspective it is!). We have tree police - I do not know if they are official, but they pretty much don't let you cut a tree until it falls on your house (little late!); if you want to add a bathroom or prep sink in the new kitchen...you must wait until water credits come available (possibly years), and maybe most importantly all the big fish in the little sea (the city council) could not deiced on a replacement mayor, so they flipped a coin..I will never run for mayor...I always lose coin tosses.

I am having a mental meltdown trying to get my "real" work done, and so todays' regularly scheduled post will have to wait, but I saw this on Nicolasa's blog Low Expectations (I met her on SITS Sharefest Saturday!). And thought, since I {heart} these things (see Sundays post) I would go for it...
Amber @ aefilkins is hosting another fabulous Monday at her blog..Friend Makin' Monday. To meet new people check her out!

What are your hobbies?
*Scrapbooking (not that I am nearly caught up...my son is 8 and I am on his 4th year)
*Crafting: Never met a project I didn't like!
*Cooking and Baking (I call this a hobby because I am still learning...how old am I?)
*Home Improvement: Used to be design, but when we moved, improvement became more necessary than design...now finally at the point of meshing the two.
*Writing: Who knew? I would have never guessed this 15/20 years ago...I hated writing.
*Blogging: Apparently, my intention to start one little wedding blog to support my books/wedding biz has turned into two blogs (one for the family) and a full blown hobby.

What do you wish that you knew how to do?
*Quilting: Have wanted to do this since I saw "How to Make an American Quilt" way back when. Quilting to me is an art and I love it. (My great-grandmother made the quilt above, my grandmother added on to it, and my mom has embroidered all of the girls names on it)
*Golf: No time...they don't take too kindly to 2 year olds as caddies on the Pebble Beach Golf Courses.
*Gardening: I do it but not well. I need to be able to do more than read the tag at the nursery and bring the plant home to die.

What I {heart} to do, but don't do enough:
*Crafting: See above..all the supplies and intentions, but where does the time go?
*Sewing: Was a fashion designer and have not done much since...really miss it!
*Art/Drawing/Painting: Ditto the above two answers.
*Knitting: Great friend taught me how to knit a couple of years ago and I loved it, but with a little munchkin, home duties, and everything else, it has taken a backseat...but I have lots of projects in mind.

It has taken me a lot longer to get to this post than I wanted (I tried last night at 1 am but was afraid of my proofreading so I stopped)...we have been sick and parading with the butterflies (check back tomorrow for that), but finally a quiet Sunday morning (I cannot believe my 2 year old is still asleep at 11 am) and there is time to get to it. I am amazed at how busy the weekends are!

Here we go...
I am flabbergasted (one of my favorite words...it is just weird, I know!)! I am still new to blogging, but have been lucky enough to meet up with a great group of fellow bloggers. I am amazed at how accepting and friendly this circle of people are. I am so honored to be receiving awards at this early stage of my blogging addiction.

I am (really) horrible at expressing thanks with lots of flowing, lovely words, so I will stick to some tried and true basics...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! These awards really do mean the world, and inspire to continue spending endless hours on my computer.

And, so, first...
Lee from Hormones, Headaches & Hot Flashes gave me this first award. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her blog. She is hilarious and just makes my bloggy day! (See what happens when you are a stalker!). If for some reason you have not checked out her blog...go do it NOW.

This award was created by Matty over at Matty Thoughts and has some rules (see bottom of post). He is a great commenter - they are all so thoughtful, and it is super fun to have a man's perspective on things. Don't forget, check below..I played along with the rules.

WOW... another much appreciated award!
So, I was super, just beyond thrilled to receive one award, but TWO. - I am over the moon. Willougbhy over at This Stop Willoughby has awarded me The Friends Award. Knock me over with a feather (have I used enough cliches yet?). I enjoy her blog very much and she has a ton of great ideas, like this Cocktail Party she is throwing. Yipppeee! Thank you so much Willoughby for bestowing this award on 504 Main.

The rules to this award are:

*This award is bestowed on to blogs that are exceedingly charming.
*These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends.
*They are not interested in self-aggrandizement.
*Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated.  *Please give more attention to these writers.
*Deliver this award to other bloggers who must choose others to pass it on to and include this *Cleverly-written* text into the body of their award.

It isn't specified how many bloggers I am supposed to pass this award along to...so I am going to take a shot at passing it along to some people whose blogs I enjoy, have continually visited my place, and have been supportive with their comments. There are many many people I would love to pass this along to, but somewhere along the road they have received it...so I would like to say a BIG THANKS to them for visiting my place and commenting and following
  1. The MacDonald World
  2. A Full Life
  3. 5thSister
  4. Tattoos and Teething Rings

Along with Matty's award are these little questions that are SUPPOSED to only have one word answers. It is really hard for me to use one word...but I did it almost!
