Where I live there are an abundance of fabulous old Victorian homes with amazing woodwork. Fortunately, a large majority of those homes are being restored - this is definitely an area where people value their history and architecture. Unfortunately for me {for purely selfish reasons} I cannot seem to find an old wood window anywhere...until recently...I found 4 great old wood windows at the dump! They were a few bucks a piece, and, no, they are not Victorian, but they are wood!
I was thrilled. So many ideas…but for now this one!

Saved Window
Click HERE for a PDF tutorial
Supplies
* Old wood window
* Gorilla Wood Glue
* Vintage image. I used this ONE from The Graphics Fairy.
*DecoArt Acrylic paint (for all over or touch ups). I used Americana Bleached Sand.
*Deft Semi Gloss Wood Finish Spray from Rockler.
*DISChangers - I used two 2" DISChangers...view their product chart to determine what you will need
*Dremel Multi-Max {How much do I love my Dremel?!!!} or sand paper
*Inkjet Waterslide Decal Paper (squeegee, fixative, mounting fluid). Your preparation will vary depending on the brand of the decal paper

DIY IT!
1. My window was falling apart. I cleaned it up - I purposefully did not sand away or cover up the nicks and dings - and carefully used Gorilla Wood Glue to solidify the joints by gluing the window back together. Let dry.
2. If necessary  - or desired - hit the spots that are bare {if any} with paint in desired colors. My window happened to already be painted in a buttery ivory color, but there were a number of places that needed some paint. I Used DecoArt's American Acrylic Paint in Bleached Sand to put a light coat all over the window. I left a lot of the “old” there.
3. After the new paint is dry, use the Dremel {or sand paper} to distress the new paint.
4. Cover window glass and spray the wood frame with the Deft Wood Finish.
5. Print vintage image onto waterslide decal paper (using glossy setting for paper). Follow manufacturers directions (mine are as follows)
* Let ink dry for 60 minutes.
* Spray with fixative and let dry at least one hour.
* After dry, cut closely around image.
* Prepare lukewarm water in a dish large enough to submerge decal.
* Place image in water…as it curls up, gently uncurl it.
* Let sit for 30-60 seconds or so.
* Remove from water and place on window by gently holding decal in position and sliding backing away.
* Use squeegee to GENTLY remove excess water and air bubbles.
* Let dry.** The edge of the decal will dry almost invisible.
 6. I used 2 - 2" DISChangers, one on each corner, to hang my pretty window
NOTE #!: I cannot actually show you it hanging right now...it is part of a redo of my living room wall...so you just need to wait another week or so for the final reveal! There is one {or twelve} more window project that goes along with this!

**NOTE #2: I rubbed a little hard {gentle is not always in my vocabulary} when I squeegeed my water out and some of the decal ink rubbed off. Honestly I did not mind it...IT made it look old...which was the point anyway!

Only one year ago, I thought blogs were weird, odd, pointless, useless, and basically for people with no social skills in the real world - stay with me here...it gets better. In fact I had never really even read a blog when I made these assumptions. I cringed when my editor told me to "get a blog" {to promote my last book}. I did it...I "got a blog" {or 5!} and left them sitting dormant and unloved for almost one year.

Then I read a few blogs. The first blog I ever read was Reluctant Entertainer - have you been over there? Sandy is the bomb and she has a fabulous book out {and there may be a chance to win one here very soon!}. As I read Sandy's blog, and a few choice others, I realized I was ALL WRONG about blogs. Blogs are written by men and women from all over who have amazing, touching, and inspiring stories to share, as well as hints, tips, and crafty tricks to teach.

Soon after, I bought Blogging for Bliss: Crafting Your Own Online Journal: A Guide for Crafters, Artists and Creatives of all Kinds and my buddy Jenn started a blog. I was impressed and amazed and had to be a part of the action {that's how I roll} and finally take the plunge. I posted my first "masterpieces" on 504 Main and Hip Weddings about one year ago and have not looked back..although I think my hubby wishes I would stop and look back and then just stop!

Hip Weddings was established to promote my books and share my knowledge and love of all things wedding...that blog was far easier to begin. 504 Main was established to be a place to share personal stories, to craft and to hone, expand, learn how to trust in my writing ability, but I had a harder time with beginning this blog. I do think I have found my voice and my place, maybe even created my own place. I do not just DIY and craft...I do not just cook...I do not just write. I love it all and do it all here.

I can narrow down why I blog into FOUR main reasons...
1. I blog for myself. This blog is for me and only me. In my life, I drop off kids at school, cart them back and forth to practices and playdates, make dinner, clean the house, and pick up dog poop {the list could go on and on}...and I choose that...BUT this blog is one of the only places in this world I consider to be all mine...I can blog about what I want to blog about. I do not have to include my kids, my hubby, my friends in it/on it if I do not want to.

2. I used to be a crafter, a creator, a designer, but I had long put away my paints, glitter, sewing machine, and crafting supplies. I just couldn't seem to find the time..Blogging inspires me and fuels my creative energy. I am re-energized to DIY and it makes me happy.

3. Blogging pushes - challenges - me to write and hit PUBLISH POST - it takes me out of my comfort zone. At first I thought "Why am I so scared?" No one reads this that I really know {like in real life}...and then people started telling me..."Oh I loved your post," or "I made those Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies." GULP! People that I know...in real life...are reading. This will only make me a better writer.

4. The amazing interaction with other bloggers is beyond anything I could have imagined. I have cried, laughed, screamed with glee, and even been pissed off at things I have seen and read. There is such an amazing and diverse community of bloggers. If you have a problem or an issue, chances are there is someone out there who can lend an ear or offer some advice.
At the end of the day, when it comes to my blog, I have to follow my heart. "It" - readers, friendships, camaraderie - will come naturally and people will respond if I am genuine and real on my blog and in my comments. When I pay too much attention to numbers, i.e., "blogging for numbers," - followers, subscriptions, daily visits - blogging becomes a chore. I have to remember to not get caught up in numbers and blog because I like it, because I want to, because it is an expression of me.

To end, I must say I thoroughly enjoy reading all of your blogs and being able to call you my bloggy friends...if I ever win the lottery, I will buy you all a plane ticket and we can have a party. This blog has been such a joy to me and I truly appreciate you reading and coming by and letting me be a part of your blogs as well.
So, now, the BIG question -
WHY DO YOU BLOG?
I want to hear it all!

I had been cruising along on the getting back to blogging journey -
I was enjoying my stroll down memory lane and dreaming of
Thelma and Louise in my laundry room...
and then there was this prompt for Day 4,
"Write a new post about a woman who inspires you"...
SCREECH...crap...what am I going to write about!
There are so many inspirational people in this world,
but who inspires me and why? That was a hard question to answer.
Honestly I do not stop to think about it all that much.

At first I thought I can pick any number of celebrities
who give their time and money to charitable causes,
but I was not feeling it...I am not all that impressed by them
{I could go on and on but then this post will turn into something else}.
I am more inspired and impressed by ordinary people
who have regular lives and jobs, and families,
and obligations but still find time to contribute to the world,
their community, their friends on a daily basis.

So, after a couple of days of thinking Thelma and Louise
and I were heading for the cliff, it hit me!

Tiffany
At twenty three I became a Big Sister. It was something I had wanted to do for a very long time. I have mentioned in a post or two that I never imagined myself married and definitely not with children. I thought this was one of the best ways I could give back to the community, after all I wasn't going to have my own children to guide, and there were plenty of kids out there who could use someone in their lives.

In typical Holly fashion I could not just be a Big Sister...I had to get more involved, so I volunteered to work on the Bowl-a-Thon - the big annual fundraiser which we worked on with one of the Big Brother Organizations. When I decided to do this, I really could not have imagined a finer group of men and woman working together to help these kids and raise money for such a worthy organization.

The leader of the pack, Tiffany, worked for the Big Brothers organization. Tiffany is Michelle Pfeiffer-esque looking lady {she is actually more gorgeous than Michelle!} - simply stunning! She is one of those people who I like to categorize as "If I did not know you, I would have to hate you" - because really, she is one of those people who are too good to be true. She was and is a kind, gentle, loving, talented, all-around amazing woman who gives and gives of herself to help others.

Tiffany worked tirelessly with Big Brothers on all of their events and she took real pride in the Bowl-a-Thon because this was one of the fundraisers the kids could be a part of too and bowling is fun and silly, and quite honestly we were a pretty fun group of people to work with! We all worked together on this event for about four years...then, for reasons I cannot remember, Bowl-a-Thon was cancelled.

Around this same time, Tiffany got married. She planned a beautiful celebration to a man as equally wonderful as her. When it came time for me to get married, she was a huge help. I was lost as the day approached. I thought I had it handled but I did not {I was not a wedding planner yet...and well, all of those details are a post all it's own}. Tiffany and my other Big Sister friend Cindy volunteered to get me out of my pickle. They arrived on the wedding day, whipped those vendors into shape, arranged all of my DIY wedding decor, and Tiffany's husband even laid the most perfectly straight 200 foot aisle runner {up 4 sets of stairs and all}. Tiffany and crew gave selflessly to help a friend.

Soon after all the celebrations in our lives took place, Tiffany's very good friend, who had tried and tried to get pregnant did. The baby boy was born with a serious disease and passed away soon after birth. Tiffany and her friend channeled their heartache and their energy into creating a Boundless Playground in the area in honor of her son. At this type of playground, kids {and adults} of all abilities can play side by side {if the friend's baby would have survived, he would have been in wheelchair for life}.

So why does Tiffany inspire me? Simply, because she is am amazing person who values her friends and her family. She believes in the good in people, and she works to make this world a better more accepting place through the work she does with her charity and how she leads her life. These are the kind of people I admire. These are the kind of people I want to teach my children to admire and to be inspired by -  real people with passion and the motivation to go out and make a difference in the world.

NOTE: I have not talked to Tiffany in years - just circumstances of life and moving - but she and all of those special people hold a dear place in my heart. I do keep in touch with one of the ladies via Facebook and her little {that is what we called the Little Sisters} has gone on to medical school! I chat with another every now and then, and ironically am friends with her husbands ex-wife. One of the ladies, moved back to her home state to be with her family and sadly passed away about a year ago...I miss her. I am friends with my Little too...she is married with four beautiful kiddos!

P.S. I am sure some of my facts may not be quite right...my memory is fuzzy, but the important stuff is right! It actually feels a little weird to be writing about her.

I am getting back to my bloggy roots with SITS!
I was planning on reconnecting with my blog...
over a glass of wine of course!
So, this is just what my blog and I needed - some alone time.
Although I am horrified at finding all the typos in my early posts - YIKES!

Before I move on...I just want to say a big thank you to SITS, and event sponsors,
Standards of Excellence, Westar, and Florida Builder Appliances
for this challenge. I like it so much that so Thelma and Louise
are not even my main motivation...
although they are oh-so-pretty and full of turquoise sky fabulousness!
The topic of today's SITS "get back to blogging" challenge is:
"Re-upload a post with a title that you are particularly proud of and explain why."

THE WHY
9/15/10
I am a HUGE fan of Dirty Dancing! I think I knew every line and every song by heart and cannot even begin to tell you how many times I watched the movie...Oh, wait...excuse me while I put in my Dirty Dancing Cassette for some motivation. OK, I am back. I so badly wanted to run away and go dance with Johnny and be Baby's best friend, maybe even sit in the corner with her.

As I grew older I dreamed of taking my own brood to a family camp, just like the one in the movie. Well, we went to family camp...and this is our story. I thought my title was funny - I still get a chuckle over it..maybe it isn't funny...maybe I am just a little lame...maybe it was late at night when I wrote this the first time, but come on people, don't you see the connection...I had a baby, the camp was filthy, and that is THE line from the movie - get it? OK, moving on...

The Only Corner To Put Baby In Was Dirty
{This is a slightly PG rated post for mild language}

Once or twice a year, hubby and I have the same argument...where are we going on vacation? Pre-baby No. 2, the answer was Hawaii. Post baby No. 2, the thought of a 5 hour flight...the time difference...and traveling with my husband who pulls out his "ASS" Hat {and proudly wears it} the minute we leave the house for the airport, was more than I could handle.

A couple of years ago, I took the bull by the horns. I have always wanted to go to family cap. Um, yeah Dirty Dancing was one of my most-favoritest movies ever! I could actually hear "I've had the time of my life..." playing as the theme song to our vacation. I had dreams of cute little cabins, talent shows, entertainment, activities, and good old-fashioned camaraderie amongst "campers"...how could you beat that!?

Joe was turning 7 and always was asking to meet new friends. At Family Camp he would have his own activities...there would be kids to play with...he was going to LOVE it. As for Jules, she was just shy of turning one...so that was not going to be easy no matter what, but still I wouldn't have to cook, we wouldn't even have to decide where to eat...and we were staying in California - no time difference to mess with naps or bed time...PERFECTION!

Hubby reluctantly agreed to my wild fantasy of "Dirty Dancing" Family Camp. I was even able to find a great deal on a camp - which was also highly touted in a well-known magazine. Summer vacation begins in early June for us, so we were able to hit the road the second week of June. Better yet, this camp was offering 40% off of their regular rates---Dealicious! If you have ever priced these camps...they are not cheap...in fact Hawaii would have cost less {at full price}, but at 40% off it seemed the time and the price was right.

As per the website and lovely person on the telephone, we were promised lakefront rooms, a heated swimming pool, 3 gourmet meals per day plus a full 24/7 snack bar, campfires, theme nights, horseback riding, mountain biking, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, rock climbing, archery, riflery, and more! There was baby sitting and organized activities for the children all day..."Mom HEAVEN" was waiting for me!

We packed our car to the brim and headed for our destination. There was a big powwow that night and we didn't want to miss a thing. We survived the drive to be greeted by a big dirt lot, a pond posing as a lake, a bunch of pissed off parents, kids running everywhere, and camp counselors and staff hanging out at the pool...and no one in charge who knew anything about anything!
We settled in to our less than welcoming room. It was ugly, disgusting, dirty, and buggy, with straight-from-a-rental-cabin-this-is-what-we-had-left-at-home-and-instead-of-taking-it-to-the-Goodwill-we brought-it-here 1970's decor. I was still seriously appalled...at full rates, the cost of this place rivals the cost of the Ritz or Four Seasons...I was not expecting so much dirt and tackiness. We also had our very own glorious smelly, musty bathroom...just what every vacationer dreams of! After recovering, we headed down stairs for the big powwow. It did not go as anyone planned...

{the following is a synopsis of our powwow}
Camp Dude {CD}: "Welcome. We are glad to have you here...Yada...Yada...Yada...We just wanted to go over a few rules and let you know when meals are served. You all will pretty much be on your own this week as our activities do not start until next week. We'll have the pool open for you a couple of hours each day, and the craft room will be open tomorrow for a few hours. The lake will be off limits because the lifeguard isn't here, but there are many hikes and trails to check out. They are just a short drive from here"

Me:..in my head...looking around: "WHAT!? Oh CRAP. Hubby is going to K-I-L-L ME DEAD RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. How did I miss this? Where was this on the website or when I called? Am I that sleep deprived? How, oh how did this happen?...This week is going to suck BIG TIME."

Then, I snapped out of it and I heard it...the rumblings...the whispers...and then one mom, who was traveling with two children under the age of 2 1/2 asked...yelled...the question..."WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?"

CD:"This is not a full program week. This is a trial run, a training week, to get us ready. We do not have all of the counselors here yet. We are not ready for real campers."

Somehow, he and the few staff members present were not immediately strung up by their toe nails and tortured by the 50 or so families. Much to their credit, each the families other than "that one mom," remained calm and told CD that we were not told that little detail, and they better figure out a way to make this "right"...RIGHT NOW! Collectively the families agreed to leave the next morning and dispute our credit card charges if something didn't happen and QUICK!

To help our cause "that mom" packed up and walked out right then and there. The rest of us were just dumbfounded and thinking what are we going to do with all these kids and nothing to play with, nothing to do for one week. This was our bonding moment at camp. We figured we outnumber them and therefore, we can pretty much do what we want...we will go in the lake, we will have a campfire, we will not let "you" ruin the trip.

To their credit, CD and his superiors pulled together some activities for the next day. They called in every counselor they could, and offered a half-ass program for the kids. Not to their credit, they left my 7 year old son alone on the dock fishing {when he was supposed to be in their care} because the girl counselor wanted to water ski with the "hot" dude.

After 2 days, they offered every one free mountain biking, horseback riding and water skiing on the pond (we knew there would be additional charges for these activities}. We all decided to stay. We made the camp ours...we raided the kitchen at night and took the s'mores fixins', we made our own campfire, we played games...it was fun, but not what it was supposed to be...
My son was able to do archery and shoot BB guns and a rifle - to this day, if you ask him, he will tell you it was one of the best vacations ever {other than Hawaii}. As for me...it was miserable...everything was dirty...the dining room was dirty, our room was dirty - nails were falling out of the bunk bed - that is good for a one year old to play with!, the playground was a bunch of broken plastic climbing structures, there were a bunch of horny single parents trying to hookup with one another, one man who seemed to think he was the camp stud {NOT!} and his wife the camp MILF {glad he thought that, but double NOT!}.

As for the camp counselors, they were too busy flirting and hooking up with each other to care about the campers - they took up every chair at the pool and jumped in front of us at meal time ...apparently we were interrupting their vacation! To add insult to injury, they were having training throughout the day and evenings on how to greet and treat the campers coming to stay. They even had s'mores and campfires...we were not invited.

This was no Dirty Dancing experience. It was dirty but there was no dancing, and certainly no "Johnny." There was a "Baby" though. Although I am pretty sure some of the other antics that happened in Dirty Dancing were happening in the counselors quarters. I would be remiss if I did not point out that on our second to last night there, camp management called us all together to thank us for staying, and offered us and additional 50% off of the already 40% discounted price. That helped easy the sting of the vacation, but we all would have rather had the experience we were promised.
And, hubby obviously didn't kill me,
but I am not allowed to plan vacations anymore.
Has anyone ever been to family camp?
Anyone have one to recommend - I swear I want to try this again!
Happy Camping!
Holly

Today is the actual day!
One year...
I do not even wan to think of how
many hours I have spent on the computer!
{the link for the blogday celebration giveaway
is at the bottom of the post!}

The topic of today's SITS "get back to blogging" challenge is:
"Re-upload a post you wish more people had read and explain why it was important to you."
****************************
Typically I just write my stories and thoughts without preparation - I just sit down and do it - notes don't work for me...but the idea behind this post had been brewing for some time and I could not keep it all straight in my head...and then it was not quite right, or maybe I was not quite ready to publish it yet. I talk about the kids in generalities {even write their names}, but do not go into too much personal detail...so it was "scary" to hit PUBLISH POST for this one. I was unsure of how it would come across, if I would be able to convey the feelings and emotions I wanted to.

I find this post to be even more relevant as my son grows older. I need to accept his personality, his decisions, his journey to become who he is meant to be, not who I envision him being. I love who he is and what he is becoming, but we have many differences in our basic personalities that makes this a challenge sometimes. I am looking for new ways to connect with him as he grows out of "little boyhood."

Here are a few of my own thoughts on mommyhood.
{with a few edits since the first publishing date}
October 2, 2009
He is Not Me
As a mom I have flashes of brilliance, with a lot of sparks and misfires in between. This post today is about a spark that has taken me way too long to realize (I am still working on it)...

I am the mom that still walks my 8 (now 9) year old up to the classroom door and waits until he is inside. I am the mom who despite her son's pleas, “Can you just do big kid drop off?” continues to do this. Joe is growing up...and I cannot stop it - I mean, obviously I know that, but I just couldn’t (or didn’t want to) really see it. Honestly, it wasn’t until my daughter was born two (now three) years ago that I even really realized this was happening.

By profession, I am a wedding planner. I admit it, I like plans! I thought way back when that when I was pregnant with Joe that I could plan out his life, mold this child to be who I wanted him to be. I figured that if I was focused and driven and (slightly) competitive he would be too. If I liked arts and crafts, he would too. Ha! I very quickly (like within minutes of the birth) realized the joke’s on me!
our fantabulous castle we built together

Joe has a unique and quirky sense of himself, which I often do not understand right away. Because of that, I admit that I find myself riding his ass -  “good behavior…respect…manners…pay attention…focus.” I want him to be the best he can be, to be respectful, polite, and caring. Every now and then I step out of my "mom shoes" and objectively look at him. When I do, I realize he is all of those things and more.

Joe is loving and brilliant, persistent and insistent, intense and purposeful (when he wants to be). Did I mention persistent? He hugs and kisses me all the time - I am waiting for the day some kid makes fun of him for this - although I am not sure he will even care - at this point his peers opinions do not seem to bother him at all (how much do I hope that continues?)...and he always wants to snuggle. He is kind and loving with his sister beyond my wildest dreams. He thinks she hung the moon (and visa-versa).

When I think about the boy I have raised thus far and how to raise him to be the teenager and man I hope he can be, the most important thing I have realized is that he is his own person - a fine, loving, bright person – he is wonderful and amazing in his own way...and most importantly, he is not me.

I thought this was perfect timing - I was already planning on doing a few of the topics anyway. Tomorrow is another SITS "back to blogging" post:

Way back on September 14, 2009, when I decided to start this blog, I had no idea how much fun I would have...how many great people I would "meet"....or how many amazing ideas I would discover. Much less, did I think anyone would actually want to read what I had to say...but fast forward a year and here I am...and people actually read what I write! WOW...who knew?
So, since I {heart} you all, I have decided to have a giveaway
(and a pretty cool one at that!) to celebrate.
Compliments of me and my pal Cynthia at A Legendary Affair
(it is not just a wedding store...you can grab all kinds of cool
stuff online at her shop).
You can win one of these super cool
personalized stampers from PSA Essentials.
Here's what you get:
You win the stamper body and one personalized stamp. The great - no amazingly fun thing - is that you can then purchase other stamps, to use on the stamper because PSA Essentials has cool peel and stick technology.

Here's who can win:
Residents of the U.S. or Canada. I will ship to these countries only (sorry!).

Here's the requirements = 1 entry:
  1. You must follow this blog to win! Tell me where or how you follow (GFC, Feedburner, Reader, email). Just leave a comment and let me know you are already a follower. Of course new followers can join in!
GIVEAWAY CLOSED
For more entries...BE SURE TO LEAVE A SEPARATE COMMENT FOR EACH:
  1. Follow this blog on Google Friend Connect (if you do not already). If you do, leave a comment and let me know.
  2. Subscribe to via email (click the icon at the top under "who I am")
  3. Subscribe to the posts with Feedburner (click the icon at the top under "who I am")
  4. Follow me on Twitter (504 Main) and tweet about the giveaway: Celebrate with @504Main! Win a personalized stamper! http://tiny.cc/cpe9d

This can be done once a day, leave a comment for each tweet.
And the winner is....
The winner will be selected on Wednesday, September 22 at 5:00 pm Pacific Standard Time. I will randomly select a winner by pulling names out of a hat, unless I can figure out how to use the random number generator. Winner will be announced on Thursday, 9/23.
Good luck!
