Home is Flowers in My Yard

I can grow what I can grow, and usually stick with those items. I actually love gardening..at least the act of it...my outcome is not always successful...but I keep trying. I {heart} rosemary and lavender for many reasons, but it doesn't hurt that I don't seem to kill them. Once upon a time, in Southern California - land of sunshine - I somehow managed to grow a beautiful herb garden and bountiful roses, and all sort of other beauties {that I do not know the names of}.
Then we moved. Our "new" house had an abundant garden...but by the time escrow closed...many of the plants had died or were just about dead {long story}...I did my best to revive some of these plants...to no avail. And now I had a new type of climate to consider...land of fog and dampness. I was and still am pretty clueless...let's not even talk about the deer {I am a city girl...what the heck!}
Anyway, I have moved things around and planted {*cough, cough*} some of my  own beauties, but some of my favorite blooms are plantings from the previous owner. I especially love the geraniums...they bloom year after year and there are many varieties planted on the property {that makes it sound like I do not live on a postage-stamp size lot in coastal California} that smell wonderful!
Here are some more lovely blooms in and around my home.
I adore these plants and look forward to their
blooms and their scents every year...
A welcome to Spring, and always a bright spot in my day!
And I cannot seem to kill them...yeah!
Actually the rule is I am not allowed to touch them.

What's your favorite flower in your garden?
Do you have a gardening trick I should know?
My plants will thank you!

  1. My Asiatic lilies are my favorite, but I'm a horrible gardener so I don't have much to see out there!

  2. Love the photos!! We won't be planting flowers or anything else for a few more weeks. But I can't wait :)
I have a huge garden (the size of most city yards), weeding is the worst :)

  9. Beautiful flowers! Everything grows better in CA. I love my hydrangeas, but they are slowly blooming this year. Our rare 3 snows sort of threw them off. Usually by this time they are blooming like crazy. I do see about 200 hundred buds, though, so I know I am in for a good season. My trick is to leave them alone and prune back the dead stems in the spring.

  10. I make it a rule not to go near flowers, since my presence seem to kill them - but my mom had the most beautiful garden I've ever seen (now she's sold that house since she and her hubby are moving with me and mi novio to DR) - I hope that somehow I can have a beautiful garden too, when I have a house - guess I'll have to hire a gardener and keep a safe distance from the plants!

  11. Mine is what you call a volunteer garden... whoever volunteers to grow there is welcome to stay! I am like you- love to garden, not that great at it.

I did plant a little herb garden over the weekend for the kitchen, and I hope to use some of the lavender and rosemary in some future soaping escapades...

  12. Girl, I love flower gardens. Dianthus became my favorite a few years ago when I plant several at our old house. They were gorgeous. They were full of blooms, big (as in the full plant was at least 10 inches across). Then we had to move...bummed beyond belief. The house we are in now, well couldn't get anything to grow. Boxwoods out front (we are renting) take all the nutrients and don't have enough money to sink into making the soil inviting under boxwoods. So, since we have to be out of here by June 30th (just found out), then I am hoping what we move into will be more inviting.

I have planted my veggie garden though (in planters). Can't wait for those to start germinating.

  13. I pick out the things to plant, my husband is in charge of their care. He loves it...I love the result. I want to grow lavendar, and we can never find it to plant. I need to look now before it is all gone again this year.

My favorite thing to have growing is basil. I use so much of it in the summer and I even bring bunches in the house to put in a vase...love the smell.

  15. These blooms look pretty and healthy to me! I love the IDEA of gardneing. And do it until the ungodly hot and humid weather sets in. If my blooms looked like yours, I'd feel successful.

Beautiful flowers. And you should see the deer down South. When I was in middle school, I think it was, my Nana and I were driving down the dirt road (yes, we have dirt roads) and a flock? of deer ran across the road right in front of us. It was scary at first because we didn't see it coming, but they were very beautiful to watch. We see them all the time. I've seen them in people's backyards, my grandparents' runway, the interstate. They're everywhere.

  21. Those are beautiful! I have never seen some of those flowers before. Much to my mom's dismay I do not have a green thumb.

  22. Love the garden, Holly, it's beautiful! Right now I'd say our peonies are my favorite. I'm ready for veggies and the herbs though, too.
Oh, yes, lettuce right now too is PERFECT.

  23. Ok, those are beautiful. I try to garden, I do, but I suck at it. I always forget to water and weed and what not. Let's not even discuss that I simply don't even understand how the grass can grow here after all that snow this winter. WTF???

You're on the Monterey Peninsula??? Yes foggy and damp, but man o man when that sun shines, it is something to see!

Love ya babe, we have to chat. SOOOO much to discuss.

    Lots of yummy love,

  29. I have no tips...I could probably use some good gardening tips though! My roses are finally starting to look pretty after almost three years! I'm not so great in when it comes to plants and flowers!

  30. gorgeous buds!!! i've decided that growing things in california (we had an amazing garden there!) works out much better than here in south carolina (our garden here = stinky)! i guess that's why all our produce comes from ca! : )

  31. It's more of a bush than a flower, but my favorite is the azalea. They are so beautiful her in the south when they all bloom. Wisteria is gorgeous too.

I'm not a green thumb so not much advice on that front. I'm like you, plants live longer when I don't touch them.

  32. I wait all winter for my flowers in the summer. There are none blooming here yet in Wisconsin......I am waiting impatiently. Yours are all so beautiful.

The Captain is a Master Gardener if you ever have problems, take a picture and send it to me, will get right back with a homemade solution, not of that expensive toxic stuff, unless it's really bad. I will share some of my blooms with you soon, wait to you see the Cajun Hibiscus, and in the winter I can share seeds.
