Make Your Own Pumpkin Pie Spice

I gotta tell you...I flip for pumpkin anything!
Carved pumpkins,tattooed pumpkins...
Big pumpkins, small pumpkins...

I also love that pumpkin pie flavor. So much so that in the Fall (and summer, and spring and winter) I often use pumpkin pie spice in my recipes when it calls for cinnamon (and I think the flavor profiles fit).

What I do not like is the price of pumpkin pie spice. I got a teeny tiny bottle of it at the store yesterday...almost $6.00. All of the other spices were on sale...so I had a flash of brilliance (or at least I think so).

Why don't I just make my own?

In fact, I already had all of the spices I needs at home. I use cinnamon a lot and ginger too, but nutmeg and allspice, well I do not use them all that much.

So here is how I made my pumpkin pie spice.
The final price of what this will cost you depends on what you already have in the pantry.

I had the following already:
Cinnamon (a big container from Smart and Final for about $4.00)
Allspice, nutmeg, and ground ginger (McCormick).
(These were all on sale at the store for about $2.50)

NOTE: I was  back at the store today, I checked prices and the spices were not on sale, and thus more expensive, but they do go on sale pretty frequently during this time of the year, and you may have these at home anyway!

If you had to buy everything to make this, initially the cost is more,
but you get so much more yield by combining the spices yourself,
so then it is actually less money - did I lose you?

OK, I wanted a big jar, and guess what it will be gone in a month or so, I guarantee it!

INGREDIENTS
3 Tablespoons Ground Cinnamon
3 teaspoon Ground Ginger
3 teaspoons nutmeg
1 1/2 teaspoons allspice
You also need one jar for storing

MAKE IT!
Now this is complicated...NOT!
Combine all ingredients into one container (with a lid).
Shake to mix

Super easy!
Of course, it you are not pumpkin pie spice obsessed like me,
you can cut this recipe in half and make less.

You can also adjust the spice mixture to your liking,
for example, ore ginger and less nutmeg, more allspice, etc.

Now, be on the look out,
I have a few recipes coming up that use this spice mixture!

Do you love pumpkin pie spice? Cinnamon? Nutmeg?

Favorite Things Kitchen Edition: Sandra by Sandra Lee Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill...GIVEAWAY

Welcome to the second installment of
This is where I share some of my FAVORITE gadgets, tools, and small appliances. I may have received some of the items as part of a promotion at one point or another and some I have purchased...but I am only sharing the things I LOVE here!
(and sometimes there are giveaways - and this is one of those times)

This week we are talking about the

In April I was SUPER LUCKY and headed to New York  for the launch
of Sandra Lee's Collections at Sears and Kmart.
(you can read all about the trip if you want...FUN!)

One of the many perks of the visit was the opportunity to take home some items from Sandra's collection. I happened to be hanging out right by this grill when the time came for all of us to pick out products and snatched it up (amazingly there was room in my suitcase for it!).

When I returned home I could not wait to try this grill out.
I have owned other electric grills before and never been happy...
so I will be honest I was not expecting a lot...
BUT I WAS WRONG!
I use this grill almost daily.
I love it for grilling vegetables, and even fruit (pineapple!)
Hubby uses it for grilling meat.
It grills the food so nicely.
It even has an adjustable heat dial...LOVE!
Photo from Sears website

There is not much I love more than grilled vegetables...
this is so convenient to have in the house!
I get my grilled veggies any time I want and also get perfect grill marks!

So I do use this in the house most of the time,
but you can also use it outside, just a little help for that big BBQ!

You know what else...my son loves this grill...
it is a great tool for letting him help make dinner.

A huge bonus is that it is EASY to clean up. the top part comes out and the cord/heat probe is removable. Yo can even pop this in the dishwasher.
I just hand wash mine though.

So, let me tell ya, this grill is a treat! It is a staple in my kitchen routine!
And, thanks to Sears,
you can enter to win one of these beauties too.
Trust me - you will love it!

You can head over to the Sears website and check out the

How I Clean Naturally with #HeinzVinegar

I am a girl who likes to over complicate everything
(yes, everything!).
A very good example of that has been my cleaning supplies.
I used to buy one product for bathrooms, one for the kitchen,
one for floors, one for window, one for sinks...get the picture.
(yes advertisers must have loved me)

I have however made great strides to streamline,
simplify and also go green when it comes to my cleaning routine.
I have used Heinz Vinegar for many years for many things,
but now I have discovered Heinz Cleaning Vinegar!

Heinz Cleaning Vinegar is an alternative to harsh
and sometimes expensive chemical cleaners.
I scored a gallon for under $3.00.

From that one gallon I managed to make three different solutions,
clean my drain, and there is still some left.
You can actually cook with this too, as is is made from
sun-ripened grain and water like the Heinz Vinegar we all know,
but in a special strength.
It has 6% acidity compare to 5% for the regular variety.

I headed to Walmart to pick up my #Heinz Cleaning Vinegar. Even thought is says "cleaning vinegar" it is actually sold in the vinegar aisle, right alongside the regular vinegar. I see the point in the marketing - I do buy gallons of Heinz vinegar for cleaning, so if the cleaning vinegar is right there too, I would be inclined to try it and buy it! I did peek at the cleaning aisle and there was a generic cleaning vinegar in that aisle, so maybe Heinz needs a bit of shelf space in both places.

You can take a peek at my entire path to purchase for Heinz Cleaning Vinegar on Google+
I picked up some spray bottles, new sponges, baking soda, barmops, and some lemons... along with some other goodies.
Then I headed home to create some cleaning solutions and make my house sparkle!

And the verdict is...
I am making Heinz Cleaning Vinegar a staple at my house.
Here is why I LOVE it and how I tested it out at my house!
I am a huge fan of the natural cleaning it provides.
No more harsh chemicals in my house and around my kids
and it is gentle on my drains and plumbing
and my hands (because I never wear gloves).

Heinz Cleaning Vinegar has absolutely helped me streamline my cleaning.

I am replacing the bottles and bottles of other cleaners.
Now, I only need a gallon (or two) of the Heinz Cleaning Vinegar.
Then by mixing it with other products such as baking soda and borax (which I have on hand for homemade laundry detergent) and the like, I can easily customize my cleaning solutions, including different scents.
And the amount of money I will save will make hubby do a happy dance!

I am fine with using vinegar without any scent, but thought I would test out some different essential oils in the vinegar and water solutions to see how it reacted. I tried a tea tree oil (which I use in so many things at home) and a lemon essential oil. At first I was going to have the lemon peels "marinate" in the solutions, but decided I would get moving and pulled out the oils.

HOW TO:
Just mix equal parts Heinz Cleaning Vinegar and water, then add 5-10 drops of lemon essential oil (it depends on the strength of the scent you desire)

I tried out the lemon cleaning solution on my master bathroom sinks. I have never been happy with the streaks and spots left n the fixtures. I just sprayed it on and wiped it off...was IMPRESSED! Fresh out of the box sparkly! And the lemon scent was divine.

Then I went to town on the kids bathroom!
I cleaned the shower, the toilet, the walls, and the floor!

One way I have been using vinegar for years is to clean and disinfect my kitchen sink.
HOW TO:
I never measure - oops! - so lets go with 1/4 cup baking soda and 1-2 cups of vinegar. I just place the baking soda into the open drain and pour the vinegar.
Then watch it bubble and fizz. It just sounds clean!

Next I tackled the dirty kitchen sink itself.
How does that sink get so dirty so quickly!?
HOW TO:
I sprinkled plain baking soda (about 1/4-1/2 cup) all over the sink. Then I spray straight Heinz Cleaning Vinegar all over the sink and scrub it with a sponge.
SPARKLING CLEAN AND WHITE!
Beat still me heart!

Here are few other ways I use vinegar in my house:
I used straight vinegar (when painting and freshening up our master bathroom) on a sponge to clean the ceiling and walls to remove any mildew (our fan was broken and we already live in a moist ares...ewww). It worked better than I could even have imagined. I was going to use bleach, but thought it would be too much so I did some research and discovered this vinegar trick without the harsh fumes.

Of course to clean the windows!

Moisten a cloth with the vinegar and wipe my base boards!

Run 1/2 cup through the dishwasher- helps to keep your glasses spot-free!

A 1:1 mixture of vinegar and borax in the toilet bowl to get rid of that nasty ring!

And finally the craziest way I have used vinegar...(drumroll)
on a washcloth to soothe my sunburn!
Seriously it works to take the sting out!

Now tell me...
because I know you have some tricks...
What is your tip for cleaning naturally with vinegar!???
